Eavesdropping

I notice I am nervous to talk about music. Notice my absurd password protected posting below: I was just talking about a song. Hear’s a song I like. I don’t mind saying that much. But to say why. Well that just seems to open me up to reveal the silly, unsophisticated man I am. At least that’s my fear. And to add to that, I’m trying to not ‘compose’ my posts now. I really did spend hours on some of the earlier ones (and to produce what!? I hear you ask - you cheeky reader!).

Listen to the song here. It’s a remix of “Eavesdropping” by Grizzly Bear. I don’t know the faintest about them; Indie feed podcast dropped it in my lap (top). The hip indiefeed fellow’s intro always gives me the impression there is a hip indie music ‘community’ out there somewhere, ‘artists’ living with something more assured than the the sort of hopeful-desperation blend eminating from most of the ‘indie’ bands I’ve known.

This song I like for the sound, as opposed to the lyrics. The lyrics are interesting phrases, echoed, bringing pictures and events to my mind. Then there is the fun left-right ear switch thing. I’ve not heard the song without headphones- I imagine it looses much of that effect. I am perhaps too easy to delight. Although I listen to CBC1, stereo has been around for a while, I know. I can see some young dude at a mixing board for his friends’ band, flicking the slider back and forth - and look how amused I am by it. (Look at how cynical I am about music I like the sound of!!) But I do like it. It’s like being tickled. I should say something about the rhythms: that is something else I enjoy hearing this song. But the words to use? They sound good. Hmm.

Well there it is. A music review by moi. (By the way, j’ecrite mon ami en francaise. Il est tres mal mais bonne pour moi!)

And a movie recomendation? Everyday People. Honest, thick; political but not simply black & white; enjoyable rather than “that’s a good film but now I want to slit my wrists,” but certainly not a guilty pleasure either. Of course, I don’t claim to know anything about how the film came about or the world I claim it is ‘honest’ about, but there you go. I liked it.

Hip?? heh. Thanks man, I think im super geeky, maybe geek is the new hip lol. Thanks for the plug, there IS an indie comminuty, its real and its out there and we are working on ways to bring it closer to the fore. By participating in the conversation you become part of that community’s stream… yes there is indie music out there that goes beyond the conventional idea of indie, and thanks for reinforcing that reality. cheers, chris at indiefeed.
